Ironic by Alanis Morissette

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well isn't this nice..."
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic...don't you think
A little too ironic...and, yeah, I really do think...

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out
Helping you out

A touching letter from my brother to my daughter, Navya when she turned One in 2005.

To my darling little niece,

You are EXTREMELY special to me! NO… don’t put that cheeky little tongue out yet. :) I have loads of uncles and aunts and cousins, once removed, twice removed, even several times removed. I am even an uncle to some of my cousins’ children. But YOU, my dear Navya, occupy a verrrrrrrrrrrry special place in my heart.

You are my first ever 100% original niece as the dictionary defines it! And you will always hold that position. :)

It’s a big responsibility, mind it. Mummies and daddies are for doing all the boring stuff like setting a good example and learning to keep your room clean and teaching you the finer points of algebra so that you can score well in your exams. Uncles are meant for higher purposes… adventurous things! J Of course, here I must caution you a bit. Rappelling down mountains or playing with crazy dogs… now THAT is the domain of your other uncles, Ajay and Vijay. I am in charge of ALL things related to an adventure of the mind and spirit! :)

As you grow up, you will definitely come across ideas that will challenge you. I want you to know that at those times or at times when you feel that no one understands you, I will always be available for a heart-to-heart chat no matter where I will be on Planet Earth. I promise NEVER to judge you or treat you like I always know better as adults often tend to do… an action I myself am guilty of indulging in often with other people.

Kahlil Gibran has said about children, “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you, yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts. For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far. Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness; For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.“.

I hope that you will be part of the generation that will break out of old ways of thinking and doing that have held mankind back. I hope and wish that in the approaching years, as you and other little children discover the world afresh, this planet will become a much safer, cleaner, saner place to live in.

Show us the way, innocent beautiful little girl!

Your loving chittappa,

Vinod :)

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day

You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.

Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town

waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain.

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.

No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking

Racing around to come up behind you again.

The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,

shorter at breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.

Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines

Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way

The time is gone, the song is over,

Thought I'd something more to say.

One Day at the Police Station- April 09

It was a holiday and we were at work. Around 4.00 pm some of my colleagues left for home.

Fifteen minutes later I received a call saying that my colleague’s car was involved in a minor accident.

When I reached the spot I was told that as my colleague was waiting at a signal, a car came and banged his car from behind. As there were around four guys in my colleagues car they cornered the driver of the car who had the guts to tell them do what you want but I am not going to pay a single paisa in damages. He in fact had asked them what about the damages to my car.

When informed that they would be filing a complaint at the Police Station, he was more than happy to accompany them as it seemed that he had some political connections. In the meantime it was also clearly found that the driver did not have his vehicle papers intact.

As I reached the Police Station, I spoke to one of the cops and told him that as we were the common people without political connections, we would really appreciate if there was some amount of justice meted out, of course after doing their due diligence. I was assured that they would be absolutely fair and when told that the driver did not have his vehicle papers, the cops informed me that he was in for big trouble.

During inspection of both vehicles by the cop, the cop asked for the vehicle papers to which the driver replied that the same is in the car and as he would have to search for it among other papers he would give the same in sometime and the cop agreed.

I was shocked and as the cop was turning around to leave, I stopped him am I said if the papers are in the car, then we have no problem in assisting the driver in finding it among his other papers. This stumped both the cop and the driver and they looked at each other. On further insisting that we would help them in finding the papers, the driver made an attempt at searching for the papers which of course were not in the car in the first place.

When the mockery ended I asked the cop if he was satisfied that the papers were not in the car, he replied in the affirmative and we proceeded back to the Police Station.

As the formalities were bound to take time, I left for the office and told my colleagues to call me if needed. After about an hour my colleague called me to say that the cops had refused to file the complaint saying that as the damages were minor and claimable under insurance he should not press for any charges. When again informed to the cops about the high handedness of the driver and the fact that the papers were not in the vehicle, he was told that the driver would be taken care of.

Within minutes of my colleague walking out , they found the driver walking out scot free.

This incident happened at Kherwadi Police Station in Bandra East. We work with Axis Bank with whom the entire Mumbai Police force banks.

I dread to think what would be the fate of lesser mortals .......

Well I guess we have to let this one pass too..... as chalta hain.....
